About ScorePractice

ScorePractice turns a PDF of digital sheet music into something you can hear and practise with: a piano playback that follows the printed score, chord names, loops, one hand at a time, and a keyboard strip that lights up the keys to play, also when you plug in a MIDI keyboard. It reads digital scores (exported from notation software); scans and photos are not supported. Scores exported without their fonts, where every symbol is a drawing, are read by matching those drawings against reference tables of the music fonts. The reading is deterministic: no machine learning, no guessing.

Your scores and your data

  • Your PDF file never leaves your computer. Your browser extracts the positions of the printed symbols and sends only those to our server, which reads the music from them. The PDF itself and the rendered pages stay local.
  • What we keep. For each analysis: your account id, the file name, the number of pages, measures and notes, the measures the reader could not make sense of, how long it took, and your browser type. When a score is recognised as music but read inconsistently, the extracted symbol positions are also kept so that the reader can be improved; they are erased after 90 days. Documents with no music in them are never kept.
  • Reports. When you report a misread measure, we receive the symbol positions, our reading of that passage, your comment and, if you leave the box ticked, a picture of the measure. Reports are kept 90 days and used only to fix the reader.
  • Sign-in. Opening your own scores requires a Google account. We store the account identifier, e-mail address and display name Google provides; nothing else is read from your Google account. Sample pieces need no sign-in.
  • On your device. The pieces you open, their readings and your preferences are stored in your browser (IndexedDB and local storage) so that they reopen instantly. Clearing your browser data removes them. No advertising. Audience is measured with Google Analytics; its cookies are set only if you accept them (without them, visits are counted anonymously). Change your choice.
  • Limits. 200 pages per account per day.
